Sakurajima Island is a volcanic island located on the opposite shore of Kagoshima Bay facing with Kagoshima City,

whose circumference is about 55 km.

It was an island literally, but was connected with a peninsula by the eruption of the volcano in1914.

Ferries leave Kagoshima Port for the Island frequently and a lot of visitors come to watch

the figure of the raw, active volcano and the beautiful mountain.

Some visitors stay for night because there are many hot springs.

Access and Getting Around

Sakurajima Island View buses are used to go round the island.

Trains run from Kagoshimachuo Station to Kagoshima Ferry Terminal for 4 km.

It takes 15 minutes from Kagoshima Ferry Terminal to Sakurajima by ferry with 1 vessel per 10 to 15 minutes.

The information center next Sakurajima Port offers tour information(Sakurajima Visitor Center) and maps.
