太宰府天満宮

God of Learning:

Dazaifu is a town next to the south of Fukuoka in which Tenmangu Shine is located. It is visited by worshipers from January through December every year. A famous scholar called Sugawara Michizane passed away here in the 9th century. He is worshiped as the God of Learning by the people of later generations. Michizane was a minister of that government but was dismissed and demoted to the Dazaifu, the local government office, and then died there. Visitors are fascinated by the magnificent red gate, hall and garden. One of its features is the large number plum trees. Tenman-gu Shrine is full of tourists of the flower viewing at the time of the spring plum. Kyushu National Museum is next to it and its exhibits prove the cultural connection between Kyushu and Asian mainland.
