Kunchi is a kind of autumn festival which is held in the north of Kyushu.
The Karatsu Kunchi Festival is held by Karatsu Shrine in fall.
14 floats which are built by using a technique of traditional lacquer craftsmanship know as “Ikkanbari”
are pulled around old castle town vigorously but gracefully with the sound of the bells,
the beat of the drums, and the lilt of bamboo flutes.“Ikkanbari”is a technique
that many pieces of Washi paper are pasted and plastered together on clay frames,
and various colors of lacquer coating are applied on the surface.
The existing 14 floats were built about 150-200 years ago and are works of art and wonderful floats themselves.
Tourists will surely feel the profoundness of the Japanese festivals.
It is one of the festivals which tourists are expected to have a look.
