Hieizan
比叡山延暦寺

Mother of the Japanese Buddhism:

Because various famous priests of the Japanese Buddhism trained themselves here, and Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple spread the thought to the various parts of Japan since the temple was founded 1200 years ago, it is called mother of the Japanese Buddhism. Heap of Mt. Hieizan itself in the east of Kyoto is Enryaku-ji Temple. The beautiful temple is famous for flower blossoms in four seasons as it is a mountain. It is divided into three parts by Todo, Saito and Yokawa with many temples in it. Todo is in the center, so going around from Todo is good.

Access and Getting Around

It is accessible from Kyoto or from Otsu City of Shiga Prefecture, though it is close to Kyoto, its transport is not convenient. You can get to the foot of the mountain by car or bus, and then take a cable car, but the cable car from Kyoto is really complicated. In case of taking a train from Kyoto, get off at Otsu Station of Shiga Prefecture, then take a cable car; or take a direct bus from Kyoto Station whose services are not so many, these two ways are recommended. You can drive car to the Enryaku-ji Temple.

By train

Take the JR Kosai Line, 50minutes from Kyoto Station to Hieizan Sakamoto Station with many trains, 7 minutes to the cable car Station from Sakamoto Station, by bus with 1 bus per 30 minutes, then 11 minutes to Enryaku-ji Temple by cable car.

By bus

1 hour 20 minutes from Kyoto Station to Enryaku-ji Temple with four to six bus services per day. In addition, Enryaku-ji Temple is so wide that a shuttle bus runs from Todo to Saito and Yokawa.

By car

50 minutes from Kyoto Station to Enryaku-ji Temple.
